Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock (or in the Upside Down itself) lately chances are good that you’ve heard of the Netflix super hit Stranger Things. We’re huge fans, and of course we couldn’t help but draw some comparisons between the strange world of Hawkins, Indiana and the equally strange world of SEO.
The Real World
Like the town of Hawkins itself, SEO exists in two different realms. First, let’s talk about the “real world.” In Stranger Things, the real world is, rather obviously, the world in which everyone lives. The characters can see, hear, and interact with this world, and for a while it is the only world that any of the characters know to exist. Similarly, SEO has a “real world.” When it comes to SEO, consider the real world to be the face of your website; it’s the pages website viewers see and interact with. Here, your SEO is focused on keywords within the text that will help your website get found in a Google search. Like the real world in Stranger Things, the front side of SEO is all most people ever see or know about.
The Upside Down
But, as those of you who watch the show know, Hawkins, Indiana has another side to it – the mysterious Upside Down. The Upside Down looks a lot like Hawkins, but it is different, and only a select few people get to see it. As you probably guessed, SEO has it’s own Upside Down – a shadowy place that, like the Upside Down of the show, can have a significant effect on the real world (a.k.a. the front end of the site) and should not be ignored! SEO’s Upside Down is all the behind-the-scenes stuff – title tags, meta data, meta descriptions, header tags, etc., the website that the search engine robots see. These items play a big role in your overall home care SEO strategy and helping your website rank higher in searches.
As is true on the show, it’s important to pay close attention to these two parallel SEO worlds. Both allow users and search “spiders” (think Demogorgan, but less deadly) to have a good experience while on your site, and both help improve your ranking on search engines.
